The First Software I Ever Built (At Age 15): The Story Behind My Vastu Calculator

When I was about 15, my father  an House plan designer  showed me how he manually calculated Vastu Shastra floor areas for his designs. Each time he worked on a house plan, he had to calculate eleven parameters, known in Sinhala as “Porondum.” Watching him do all that by hand made me curious.

Back then, I had just started learning about computers and programming. I decided to take on a small challenge: could I make a program that does this automatically?

My First Real Project

Using Visual Basic, I built a simple software that calculated all eleven parameters. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. My father used it for his real architectural projects, and soon, a few of his friends started using it too. That’s when I realized something important: even simple software can make a big difference if it solves a real problem.

How It Worked

The logic was purely mathematical, based on traditional Vastu formulas.
For example:
Income = (area × 8) mod 12
Expenses = (area × 9) mod 10

The tool analyzed eleven key parameters including Income, Expenses, Nature, Nakshatra, Day, Zodiac, Caste, Deity, and more  all from a single floor area input.

Thirteen Years Later

To my surprise, this little tool kept being used for more than thirteen years. My father and other architects relied on it regularly. For something I wrote as a teenager with no formal programming knowledge, that felt special.

The 2025 Rebuild

In 2025, I decided to rebuild the project as a modern web tool so anyone could use it instantly  no installation, no dependencies, and completely free. The new version is written in pure HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, making it fast, clean, and mobile-friendly.

What I Learned

Building my first program taught me that curiosity matters more than experience.
Seeing it used for over a decade taught me that usefulness outlasts complexity.
Rebuilding it today reminded me that technology changes, but the purpose stays the same  to make life easier.

Looking Back

That small idea, born from watching my father’s work, became the first step of my journey into building meaningful tools. It’s simple, nostalgic, and deeply personal
but it still works.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the gap between those who succeed and those who fall behind has never been clearer. It’s no longer just about being skilled or knowledgeable in your craft. In 2025, one key question defines the difference: Do you understand the "Why"?

For Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) and leaders in any field, this shift in mindset is critical. Historically, many professionals focused heavily on the "How"—how to build a product, execute a process, or solve a technical problem. But with the rise of advanced tools, particularly AI, the "How" is increasingly becoming automated. Tasks that once required technical expertise can now be accomplished with the click of a button. This leaves us with a profound realization: knowing "How" is no longer enough.

Why the "Why" Matters

Understanding the "Why" gives purpose and direction. It’s the underlying reason behind decisions, innovations, and strategies. When leaders focus on the "Why," they unlock value that cannot be automated. AI can help build things faster and better, but it cannot inherently grasp the motivation, context, or vision behind what is being built. Knowing "Why" leads to outcomes that are meaningful and impactful, for both businesses and their customers.

Let’s break it down further with an example:

  • Imagine you’re building an app. Knowing "How" involves coding, designing, testing, and deploying it. While this is essential, many tools—even AI—can assist with or entirely automate these steps. However, knowing "Why" involves understanding the customer’s pain points, identifying market opportunities, and aligning the app’s goals with business objectives. This knowledge cannot be replaced, and it’s where the true value lies.

The Difference Between Obsolete and Successful CTOs

In this landscape, let’s compare two kinds of CTOs:

CTOs Who Risk Becoming Obsolete:

  • Obsess over technical debt
  • Focus on infrastructure upgrades
  • Discuss code quality metrics
  • Prioritize development processes

While these aspects are important, they center around the "How." They’re operational details that ensure the machine runs smoothly, but they don’t address the bigger picture.

Successful CTOs:

  • Identify market opportunities
  • Prioritize customer impact
  • Deliver measurable business outcomes
  • Leverage technology for strategic advantages

These CTOs think beyond the mechanics of building. They tie technology decisions to the "Why"—ensuring that every initiative aligns with the company’s goals, customer needs, and long-term strategy.

The 2025 Mandate: Transitioning to the "Why"

Technical leaders who fail to make this transition are being left behind. In 2025, the market rewards those who understand the broader implications of technology. Leaders need to:

  1. Adopt a Business Mindset: Technology is a tool to drive business outcomes. Shift your focus from merely delivering projects to creating tangible value for your customers and stakeholders.

  2. Embrace Customer-Centricity: The best innovations come from understanding your customers. Spend time identifying their pain points and finding ways to solve them.

  3. Collaborate Across Functions: Work closely with marketing, sales, and strategy teams to ensure that technology initiatives support the company’s mission and vision.

  4. Learn to Communicate the "Why": As a leader, you’ll need to inspire your team and stakeholders by explaining not just what you’re doing, but why it matters.

Final Thoughts

The rise of AI and other automation tools doesn’t diminish the importance of technical knowledge—it reshapes it. The "How" will always be important, but it’s becoming increasingly commoditized. The "Why," however, remains a uniquely human domain. It’s where strategy, creativity, and empathy converge to create something meaningful.

So, whether you’re a CTO or a professional in any industry, ask yourself: Do I understand the "Why"? Because in 2025 and beyond, understanding why to build something will matter far more than knowing how to build it.

Yum One of the configured repositories failed (Unknown) error Fix - Centos7

If you are going to update or install a package in yum t, then you suddenly see yum is stopping with following message.!!!. No worries. You can fix this issue following below steps.

Unable to run yum update - Stack Overflow

Analysis.

First of all we have to troubleshoot the issues, as it can reveal some more information and at least it gives more knowledge. 

This issue is caused by some problem in a repository called epel (extra packages from enterprise linux). It has something to do with expired ca-certificates. When surfing internet you can find some suggestions and workarounds. below workaround and fix worked for me...

Workaround

This can be skipped by modifying the epel repe configuration. use text editor (vi,vim, nano etc) to edit /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo

Then edit 4th line, change https to http.(red underlined in below image) and save


Then you would be able to do normal yum operations.

For permanent fix, you can update the repos after this, and then revert the changes. as https is way better than http.

(TFC) Washington D.C. – Those who don’t understand history are doomed to repeat it, those that do understand are doomed to watch in horror while everyone else repeats it. The run up to overthrowing President Assad of Syria was occurring before The Fifth Column existed. I covered it when I wrote daily for The Anti-Media, and even before then when I wrote for a Canadian outlet called Digital Journal. It began long before that though.
It started in 2006 when the US decided it wanted to oust Syrian President Assad and started laying the ground work. This was proven by leaked Saudi Arabian intelligence cables hosted on Wikileaks. Julian Assange said of the leaks:
“That plan was to use a number of different factors to create paranoia within the Syrian government; to push it to overreact, to make it fear there’s a coup…so in theory it says ‘We have a problem with Islamic extremists crossing over the border with Iraq, and we’re taking actions against them to take this information and make the Syrian government look weak, the fact that it is dealing with Islamic extremists at all.”
The same year, the Islamic State was just a half-baked insurgent group in Iraq. The group would then migrate to Syria, where it was reinforced by battalions of defecting Free Syrian Army troops who were trained by the United States. Many of those claimed to have ties to the Central Intelligence Agency. The Islamic State truly became achild of the United States.
In 2009, the United States began secretly funding opposition groups within Syria and even provided $6 million to Barada TV, a UK-based TV channel, to produce propaganda to support “regime change” inside Syria.
Slowly but surely, the US and its allies put this plan into effect until in March of 2011 spontaneous demonstrations popped up in Syria demanding Assad step down. Of course, Huffington Post UK would later point out that these demonstrations weren’t spontaneous at all. They were orchestrated by the Central Intelligence Agency.
In October of 2013, the US was bombarded by television pundits who advocated airstrikes in Syria. Viewers were engrossed. The television stations that aired these pundits never told their viewers that the people advocating the airstrikes were employed by the companies that made the missiles that were to be used. This was the straw the broke the camel’s back, and activist began pressuring DC todeescalate.
In September of 2014, President Obama openly admitted the plan was for regime change. He boldly stated:
“We are not going to stabilize Syria under the rule of Assad.”
Throughout this time the West has tried various methods of justifying an invasion. There were claims of chemical weapon attacks perpetrated by Assad, but the only proof offered was the analysis that the weapons might have originated from the Syrian military’s storerooms. The average American was smart enough to realize that it’s a civil war and that the weapons of all sides came from the Syrian military, except of those “accidentally” dropped to Islamic State forces by the United States. The chemical weapons claim disappeared when the Kurds were hit by chemical weapons. The Kurds were fighting the Islamic State, not Assad. There were scores of unsuccessful airstrikes launched by the West. They accomplished nothing, and the Islamic State continued to destabilize Assad. NATO alliesopenly attacked those fighting the Islamic State.  The plan was working and in June of 2015 theBrookings Institute published its paper on how to reorganize Syria.
Then suddenly, everything went wrong for the West. Russia announced it was going to begin providing air cover for Assad’s forces, and their airstrikes were just a tad more accurate. The Kurds in Iraq had massive successes against the Islamic State and bottled them up in two major cities. This offensive made thousands of Iraqi Kurds available for the fight against the Islamic State in Syria. Everything looked grim. It seemed that almost a decade of work was going to fly out of the window and Assad would remain in power.
Then a miracle occurred. Islamic State terrorists murdered more than 150 in Paris. The propaganda machine took over. Facebook asked if you wanted to change your profile photo to show solidarity with Paris. It created a social media frenzy and a propagandist’s dream. Suddenly, everybody wanted to get even with the Islamic State. Where is the Islamic State? Syria. The West now has its pretext to overthrow Assad. It will happen as a result of fighting the Islamic State in Syria. The average American is simply too stupid to understand that the Islamic State is Assad’s enemy. The West has successfully sold people on the idea that removing Assad is somehow benefiting the fight against the Islamic State. And people cheer.
That sounds crazy? A day after the attack, the US State Department released the statement of the International Syria Support Group. It reads in part:
“In this respect they affirmed their support for a ceasefire as described above and for a Syrian-led process that will, within a target of six months, establish credible, inclusive and non-sectarian governance, and set a schedule and process for drafting a new constitution. Free and fair elections would be held pursuant to the new constitution within 18 months. These elections must be administered under UN supervision to the satisfaction of the governance and to the highest international standards of transparency and accountability, with all Syrians, including the diaspora, eligible to participate.”
That’s right. Assad isn’t even out of power yet, but the new US-puppet constitution will be ready within 18 months.
Recap: The United States planted the seeds of revolt through propaganda, led the demonstrations against Assad, helped arm and train the Islamic State, repeatedly pushed a false narrative to gain a pretext to invade,denied proper air support to those fighting the Islamic State, and will now capitalize on the murders committed by the Islamic State to achieve its goal of ousting Assad. They’re so confident of success this time, there’s a timeline for the new constitution.
During all of this, over 300,000 people died and 6 million more were displaced. There will be more death and destruction. Unless, of course, Assad voluntarily steps down and allows Syria to become another US colony, which is highly unlikely.
The horrible part of this is that despite warnings, the American people did nothing. We’ve been had, but we’re the lucky ones. We’re still alive.

3.check tires,uneven tread-wear, use penny to check tread depth
4.open and close all doors-check VIN stickers in panel and on windshield
5.check evidence of leaks under the car
6.check CV joint boots
7.Bounce test shocks
8.Check glass
9.check for body damage,rust,improper body repairs
10.Check all lights/blinkers works
11.check gas cap
12.check for smoke at tailpipe when startup(bad valve seals)
13.check fluids- especially oil for evidence of coolant mix
14.Check belts, battery and when timing belt changed

TEST DRIVE

3.Change from reverse to drive a couple times-check delay or hard shift

5.Turn wheels side to side, check P/S pump
6.Drive through all gears
7.Brake with hands light on wheel-check for vibration or pulling
8.Turns while driving on both sides-Check CV's+bearing
9.Check odometer,speedometer and gauges work
10.Always check for temp and low oil pressure
11.Check if A/C cooling changes with engine speed.
12.Take car on city driving and at least 4 minutes highway driving speeds
13.Stop,turn car off and drive a second cycle as above to  try abd trigger CFL

AFTER TEST DRIVES
